Pro Bono
Parker Poe has a rich tradition of providing legal services pro bono publico – for the public good. Our attorneys provide thousands of hours of free representation every year. We take our duty seriously to help meet the legal needs of people with limited means, as well as the nonprofits who serve our communities.
Our pro bono work has included:
- Representing abused and neglected children in the Carolinas and Georgia through the Guardian ad Litem program, including in cases before the North Carolina Supreme Court.
- Providing legal assistance to refugees seeking asylum from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Nigeria, and other countries, including through partnerships with nonprofits, companies, and other law firms.
- Helping low-income clients expunge criminal records and playing an extensive role in the creation of a pilot program to help the formerly incarcerated get back on their feet in Durham.
- Advising on projects connected to the protection or development of housing for senior citizens, low-income homeowners, and foster children.
- Protecting the intellectual property rights of nonprofits focused on ending hunger, supporting women in crisis, conserving wildlife habitats, and other charitable causes.
Bar associations have recognized our firm and individual attorneys for “outstanding achievements” in pro bono work. In 2023, for example, the North Carolina Bar Association honored Parker Poe with the Law Firm Pro Bono Award and the Outstanding Collaborative/Group Pro Bono Service Award. The awards recognized our overall commitment to pro bono work, as well as the collaborative role we played in helping Afghan refugees.
We maintain an active Pro Bono Committee that spearheads and coordinates initiatives across all eight of the firm's offices. We also partner with clients and legal services nonprofits on pro bono opportunities, working closely with them to identify needs in our communities.
