Government and business officials recently announced the establishment by MTU Detroit Diesel, Inc. of a new manufacturing facility in Aiken County, South Carolina. Company and county leaders speaking at the public announcement thanked attorneys from Parker Poe for their role in bringing another international company to the Palmetto State.
MTU is a subsidiary of the Tognum Group, a Germany-based provider of power and propulsion systems. Its new location in Aiken County is the former SKF USA facility in Graniteville, and it will replace an existing MTU assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan. The company plans to hire 250 workers and invest $45 million toward expanding and transforming its new building into a facility for manufacturing engine components and assembling heavy-duty diesel engines.
“The plant in Aiken has an important role to play in our global production network,” said Joerg Klisch, Director of Operations for MTU. “It is absolutely essential that we have facilities in locations that are close to our customers, reduce our costs and make MTU less vulnerable to high import duties and exchange-rate fluctuations. Parker Poe helped make that possible for us in South Carolina.”
MTU selected Parker Poe as its South Carolina legal counsel, while it considered about a half-dozen other American cities for the new facility. Parker Poe counseled the company on economic development incentives and legal matters involving labor, tax, environmental, corporate and real estate issues.
MTU plans to begin hiring in May and open operations in October.
