Governor Perdue Appoints Bob Spearman to State Judicial Council

(RALEIGH, N.C.)Robert W. “Bob” Spearman, Of Counsel in the Raleigh office of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, was appointed to the State Judicial Council by North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue. Mr. Spearman will serve a three-year term.

In a letter to Mr. Spearman, Governor Perdue wrote, “I am most grateful for your willingness to serve the great State of North Carolina. Your leadership and commitment are critical to this Commission as a part of our efforts to strengthen our communities and improve the quality of life for our citizens.”

The State Judicial Council is an advisory and oversight body for the Judicial Branch of Government, chaired by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and consisting of representatives from every component of the court system, the bar, and public, non-attorney members. Its various duties encompass studying and monitoring the operations of the court system, and identifying areas for improvement.

Mr. Spearman has extensive experience in many areas of civil and commercial litigation. In addition, Mr. Spearman practices in areas of public law such as elections law and government procurement. He has handled numerous complex commercial lawsuits for large public companies in North Carolina federal courts, state courts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. Spearman has served as a faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and has taught trial practice at the University of North Carolina Law School at Chapel Hill. He has also lectured on litigation issues at judges' conferences and bar association seminars. Before joining Parker Poe, Mr. Spearman served as law clerk for the Honorable Justice Hugo Black on the United States Supreme Court from 1970-1971.

Mr. Spearman served on the North Carolina State Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers and on the Board of Directors of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill General Alumni Association. He also served as Chairman of the North Carolina Board of Elections, a role he held for four years.

A Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Mr. Spearman has also been named to Chambers USA: American’s Leading Lawyers, Woodward/White’s The Best Lawyers in America, North Carolina Super Lawyers and Business North Carolina magazine’s “Legal Elite.”

Mr. Spearman received his LLB from Yale University and his MA, first class honors, from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He received his AB, with highest honors, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar.
